IMO they should be OK - not sure why'd they be illegal either. I have 235's on 18x8's and had 245's on them previously both 40 series. 45 series would be more forgiving.

I have 245x40x18s and they fit no worries.
Its illegal because it increaces track width or some s**t. Cops don't seem to care unless they got no meat on em.

my mate has 275/40 17 on his 7 jj
i have 285/35 18 on my 8.5jj
