hey guys,
having issues with over heating seems the thermo fans only work on high speed and not low (only one comes on when it gets too hot up near the r on the gauge) replaced the relays but still nothing, does this mean the fans are stuffed. i have another set of fans here but they have blue wires instead of red(one black one blue from each fan) any ideas? |

Did you replace the relays with brand new ones? If just one of the two that control a separate fan is broken on an el one fan won't work.

A motor on one fan could have burnt out. Being an EL/NL it should have one plug? If the spare fans have one plug it should be ok. I'm pretty sure mine is blue and that is the factory standard colour I think. Give it a go.

the second set of fans i have dont have a plug just wires (plugs been cut off) so cut off my plug and put it on the second set of fans... they had diff colour wires factory had red and black wires from fan to plug, other fans have blue and black. so i went blue to red and black to black
still not working untill i turn on the aircon then i blow the 60 amp fuse near the battery. then i put my old fans back in and does the same nothing untill to hot or turn on aircon then i blow the 60 amp fuse again |

Not much that can go wrong mate... Either relays, fans, or wiring is rubbed and shorting...
OK we'll start with the basics... To test your fans... Measure the ohms of the good fan motor in your genuine ones... measure the ohms of the second motor... If they are very close they are OK... If the dodgey one is infinite that means its burnt out... Try the same with your spare fans that don't work either... We can test the relays... When its hot the low speed relay should pull in... So pin 86 should go to ground... Pull the 1st relay (no 1 on the lid) and find pin 86... match to the base... stick your test lamp into it and put the alligator clamp on the battery positive... Does it light? If so the low speed is working... Check power to all constantly powered pins (as shown by my schematic) (test lamp clamp to ground)... Check the no2 relay (pull from car) and check from 87a to 30 is close to 0 ohms... Let me know what you find and we'll see what we can't help out with... Cheers, Timmy

Hi mate. I just recently had the same problem on my NL. Even with the a/c on the right fan wasn't coming on too. I found the motor had burned out. I went to the wreckers and bought a new set of thermo fans and replaced the fan fuse just above the battery. Also one of the relays behind the left hand side headlight was broken too. I tried all the White relays out with the rear demister one and found which one was faulty too. So a few issues but now the fans work on slow and high speeds. Hope this helps you out.

I had a problem with my recently purchased EL V8, the thermo fans not working and consistantly blowing the 60A Fan fuselink. Make sure that 2nd relay is a 5 Pin Switching relay, otherwise it creates a short circuit blowing the fuse.
Took me 2 days to figure that out. I have another question though regarding the thermo fans, mine seem to always be ON. Even with the engine cold one fan will switch on. Is this normal?
