i just had my car on the dyno, and the bloke said that even with the larger el xr8 air snorkle and a 2 inch pipe from the box to the hole on the front bar and a k&n in box filter, im losing 10rwkw with the air cleaner on. he recomended a ss inductions intake 4 it. has ne1 got 1 and if so does it work well?

Me.
It works well but it was expensive by comparison to the Tickford snorkel. ( Picture of it in my gallery. ) I am curious why your mechanic thinks the SS CAI is better than the XR snorkel, there really shouldn't be much between them and certainly not reducing performance.

Exactly 10kw's he reckons? There really expensive things, like $250 mark. Sounds like a sale man to me.

What power is the engine putting out, unless you are getting close to 200rwkw you will see no advantage over the Tickford snorkle, and even then its the whole airbox setup not just the snorkle that starts becoming a restriction.

Tickford snorkle, stock air box and high flow filter gives you more flow that the standard maf, throttle body and inlet manifold can handle. dont pay the extra for the ss cai, it wont make any diff at all.

Which is why my next engine modifications would be larger TB, intake manifold, heads etc etc - to open up the breathing all the way.

Dont forget about the MAF, thats the worst one

Hi all, this is my 1st post (I've been on other Ford-related forums for years but never got around to joining this one until a week or so ago!)
I don't intend to hijack the thread with my question, but I thought that since it is related it would be better to post in this thread rather than make a new one. My EB V8 has a HO manifold (to be replaced with a set of Explorers), a 65mm t/b and a 70mm MAF. My intake snorkel is an EL item (XR/GT?) and I have a standard cheapo panel filter in the airbox. Regarding the panel filter, should I replace with a better quality panel filter, or a pod filter? I intend to keep the airbox closed and the intake snorkel as the sole source of air, as I don't see the point to an open pod sucking in hot engine bay air. I don't intend to cut a hole in the guard to feed a pipe thru to behind the bumper either. That would be nice (one day), but my long-term ambition is to supercharge the 5.0 so I'll wait until then before having anything drastic done such as cutting the guard. Also, it probably isn't worth doing such a thing at this point in time with a relatively stock 5.0. Thanks! -Dave- |

Changing the panel filter to a higher performance K&N, BMC or Unifilter element if probably a good idea. It's not going to give you any noticable improvements in power but every bit helps IMO, and the fact that they are reusable and filter better is an added bonus too. Don't bother going to a pod filter until you have substantial mods done, you will see no improvement over a good panel filter.

OK thanks
I'll look into one of those panel filters then. Thanks for the quick reply mate! Across all the forums, you always come to my help With that bit of info in mind, I'll buy one of the said filters when I get around to going into town next (damn country life) -Dave- |

the diff between ss and tickford is the opening that is atached to the box.
the ss is larger which in THEORY will give better flow. |

The standard size hole in the air box (on an EF anyway) looks plenty big enough to me. Dont think the ss would make much difference unless you had a 80mm MAF and 75mm TB.

The SS one requires you to enlarge the airbox entry to allow it to fit. The tickford one doesn't require enlarging the airbox entry. The gains for both are the same up until you really go nuts on a huge flowing TB and intake manifold because the SS one will continue to flow better due to its slightly larger size than the tickford one with its standard size.

my experience is that the 70mmMAF, 65mmTB, unifilter, 24lb injectors, 255 walbro pump, and kirban regulator with unichip and exhaust made 134 rwkw. The RPM11 and a good unichip returne took this to almost 139rwkw. But the cost for all these bits is close to 4k, then the 1k for the gas kit. My cold air induction is an au xr8 snorkel and a 5inch pipe from the bottom of the airbox to the corner light mount. If i am losing power then the only place i can think of is from the auto box
