Hey guys.
I have a 1992 xf s pack ute (XG body), I have had a problem since I bought it; the battery charge light comes on dimly (and to various degrees of brightness), when the headlights are on and the digital dash is on, it is very faint, but when you push the footbrake it becomes brighter etc, and with everything on; highbeam, stereo, driving lights etc the voltmeter flashes, so it is not chargeing I hear you say. Well it has a new standard alternator and I have had it checked by the auto elec, and it is fine, I am thinking maybe an earth issues, although I have put a separate earth strap from the body to the battery etc and it has not helped, anyone had this problem at all. It is annoying! Thanks Anthony |

Often the charge wire that goes from the alternator to the battery is weak and corroded, fit a secondary one out of some thicker wire, and I can nearly garuntee you will have better voltage, also are your battery terminals clean and tight? How big is your stereo?

Also check the main plug on the steering column. Pull it apart and check the pins.

Hey guys,
thanks. The stereo is small. it is an issue all the time, even though the volt meter shows voltage in the day time (and at night with only limited things on). when the heater fan, high beam and stereo is on the charging system just dies, so I will try the heavier gauge wire; I am pretty handy with a multimeter and know my way around car electrics, so I will have a look. Thanks Again. Anthony |

sounds like the voltage regulator is playing up and alternator is on its way out..

Hey guys,
It has a reco alternator in it (12 months old), but looking at it it is the 40amp (too small), do any of the later larger amp alternators fit these? I think the bloke who had it before me spent as little as he could on parts (hence the cheap reco alternator!) Cheers Anthony |

I think the XF EFI alternator was 55 amps.

Thanks mate,
I will speak to my auto elec mate and see what he recommends. the other prob I have is the battery size, I also have a hyundai excel as a run around (40 plus mpg in the city!) and I managed to fit a 600CCA 13 plate battery into it, the xf battery tray will not fit a battery anywhere near that size, can we change the tray to fit a bigger battery? Thanks |

From memory, I had a 650cca or 680cca battery that fit on the standard tray.
