I am rebuilding a motor for my car and with my tax return due any day, I decided to have a peek at the donk and set up the timing gear.
Now, after a YEAR of sitting in the shed, on a stand and under a giant bin liner I noticed the front of the crank (on the balancer keyway) starting to corrode and when I had a look behind I noticed the rear of the crank is also slightly corroded (on the running surface of the rear main seal). This is obviously an issue. So what I need to know do I just rub it off with some emery, Get another crank (MORE $$) or have it machined professionally? Also I noticed the cut outs for the cam journals have a MACHINED\SCORED finnish. From memory, this is meant to be polished like a journal. Am I right?

OK, so that covers the corroded crank but what about the Cam "Bearings"?
As above they are a machined type finnish and they should be polished, right?

You could give them a quick polish with a cross-buff on a medium speed die grinder.
But it depend what they look like and you would want to be pretty confident in what you're doing. Got any photos of them? |

I will chuck some up tomorrow if I have any light after work.
The reason I ask is that I have payed good money for the work completed and will be requesting for it to be repaired by the workshop. The shop in question deals 95% in holden stuff so he might not know that they are bearing-less.
