I have just done the ef to au 2 motor conversion, its the xr6 vct motor, everything is hooked up besides some cooling hoses and vacuum hoses, just thought i would see if it started before finishing it off, I am running the ef bbm, computer, coil pack and cam angle sensor, at first it wouldn't even crank, I had also converted it to manual along the way using a el gearbox and pedal box but hadn't plugged the switch off the auto trans into the loom so the computer didn't know it was in park or neutral, anyway, that problem solved now it cranks but doesn't fire, I am not getting any spark at all, I have drained 2 batteries trying to sort it out, its quite frustrating so am after some help if anybody has any ideas, I have gone over the wires 10 times, swapped ecu's, bcm's and ecu relay, smartlock seems to be happy and there is current at the coil pack loom, thanks in advance to anyone that helps

It says he's using EF gear. Just wondering if the VCT needs to work to make the cam do the right thing? Maybe you should of got the Pre-VCT Series 1 XR6 motor . Are the crank angle sensors the same AU to EF? Is it plugged in did you check spark? Are the plugs wet? Does the fuel pump fire up?

Is your fuel pump running? Does it prime? VGT does not need to be hooked up to run, Troyman has VCT engine and his is not hooked up.

Don't need the VCT connected for to start and run.
Most likely is the cam sensor position is out.

you say you have current at the loom to the coilpack, what about the coilpack leads and plugs, are they all alright, remembering ef did have tendency to have the coilpack fail
Also going from non vct to vct, would the timing be completely different, like I had a au ecu start and run ef motor but completely out of tune and wouldn't run for long. maybe try beg borrow a s1 vct ecu. ???? p.s. jackotjk vct motor was the optional motor au1-3 , otherwise they came with the hp motor.

the vct will have no effect on the starting or idling.
double check that the crank sensor is working, and are you using the ef cam angle sensor or the au one??? |

how would I check to see if the crank sensor is working? I am using the ef cam angle sensor, i was told the au one will not work with ef computer, it is possible the ef cam sensor is not in the right place but a mate who does these conversions told me it wouldn't matter, I would have thought whatever position its in I would be getting a spark at some stage of the crank

You need to set the motor to TDC, take the cam sensor, insert a 3.5-4mm drill bit into the hole in the side of the cam sensor body. Cam sensor can then be fitted to the engine, will not matter exactly where you locate the sensor as it will be set to TDC. Lock down the sensor and then remove the drill bit.
Cam sensor plug usually faces rear at approx 45 deg. The AU have the hole for the clamp on the opposite side to the EF motor. You can use the AU clamp and hole and have the sensor facing forward and the loom plug will reach but it is a bit of a stretch or you can locate the sensor facing correctly and modify the locking clamp. |

thanks for the help, got it sorted, took the crank sensor off and it was completely stuffed, was missing the whole end bit, had been snapped off somehow, took the one off the ef motor and it fired up first time. I must have done the cam sensor correctly as its running, was playing around with it a bit last night trying to get a spark and I am fairly sure I moved it from the original position it was in after I took it off the ef motor... thinking its not as big a deal as first thought, the computer probably figures out what it should do from whatever position its in, or it only goes in one way, or I totally fluked it...

Cam sensor is used to work out which stroke (compression or exhaust) the cylinders are on so I suspect it will either work or not.

yeah it does exactly as it's name implies...tells the ECU where the Cam is up to. Crank sensor saying motor is on TDC is useless if it doesn't know whether it's intake or exhaust .
OZBMX I thought all series 1 HP where non VCT and 2 and 3 where VCT? Maybe i should recheck my research Final bit of useless info; Iveco diesel engines will work with the cam position sensor disconnected, but it takes a bit of cranking to get started. Probably the computer figuring out when to fuel.
