hey guys
should be getting my exhaust done in a week or 2 and im wondering whats the differnence between getting stainless or mild steel thanks in advance

someone correct me if im wrong,
but stainless steel has a more "tinny" sound to it. cost alot more doesn't carbon up as much as mild has slightly better flow, you probably wont notice it to be honest personally i have and would again go for mild steel.

i rekon it would sound less tinny as its a denser metal than mild steel.
but most definatly more expensive. mine sounds alrite anyways.

Quote: i rekon it would sound less tinny as its a denser metal than mild steel. i was and am just going off what ive heard before, and ive heard that because it doesn't carbon up anywhere near as much as mild steel this causes it to have the tinny sound as theirs a lack of carbon in the pipes. could have a look at youtube to check out different set ups and see how they sound

Stainless steel is indeed denser, however denser material is more harmonic than less dense material of the same thickness. From that (this is just my logic/understanding here), the denser and thinner piping will have a higher pitch sound compared to a less dense but thicker piping. To prove this, get a 2.5" stainless steel exhaust pipe and wack it onto something hard, the noise will be high pitch, more pronounce (like a nagging woman) and the sound will last a while (think of a tuning fork). Get a 2.5" mild steel exhaust pipe and wack it onto the same hard surface, the sound will be duller, of lower frequency and the sound will dissipate much more quicker. Add to that (assuming the carbon build up theory is correct as mentioned above), the carbon will act as a sound deadener. Fortunately, high frequency sound is easily dampened and with the help of the carbon build up, you get more low frequency sound over the high frequency. Stainless steel does not rust as easily as mild steel, however there is a price difference to compensate. Anyways, that's my view, but take it as you will.

If you can afford to have it done, and intend on keeping the vehicle for a while, then go for the stainless. I dont know if there is any difference in the harmonics betweeen M/S & S/S, given same mufflers etc'???
Both my cars have s/s sytems i made. 3" on my Mav ( nice deep note ) and 2 1/2" on my Laser ( also deep sound, but like all 4 cyl's, raspy up in the rev range ) Cheers Daz

The sound will change over time for the MS exhaust while the SS system probably stays the same.

go M/S and with the large chunk you save put it towards something else Eg. underdrivers. their will only be very very minimal gains from going S/S
