I have been offered a 351 cleveland with edelbrock manifold , extractors . holley carb and FMX gearbox for $1500. Is this a reasonable buy and is there any hassle with the gearbox fitting into my xb. As far as i know the FMX was mainly used in the F100's.
I will be doing the engine up , will the FMX handle an upgrade. I know the C6 were the stronger gearbox. Cheers

An auto XB GT had an FMX box, as well as the disc brake 9" diff......as did Fairlanes.

In fact F-series used a C6 or C4 rather that the FMX which as cjh said was used in 351 Falcons.
An FMX can be beefed up but they are very heavy due to their cast iron centre section. Any of them fit in Falcons easily.

You will have to get a front yoke for the FMX, Borgy ones are different. Regards TPVM.

FMX gearbox's are junk i mean dont get me wrong there not complete junk very strong box but weigh a bloody tone and there impossible to get parts for as people just dont play with them any more coz they to big and heavy most that i have seen have ended at the wreckers or tip people just dont want them, C4 is the way to go nice small light box that with todays tech can be made as tuff as nails .

I agree, i have had a nice C4 behind mine for 20 years. And the last 3+ years its been fine with around 600HP, racing, dyno and street floggings :D
The key is a good 4 pinion front planetry set and a good rebuild and they are strong as.

In it's day the FMX box was the fastest shifting auto Ford had. This made it better suited to performance applications at the time. A few C6 transmissions were used in the XA GT initially I beleive then Production was then reverted back to the FMX, so I guess at the time it had some advantage over C4/C6, probably an irrelevant point now if C4's can be modded to take 600hp, tho.
