Having the rocker cover off could be a bit messy lol.
I had mine off and cranked it and oil sprayed out .

If you stick a temporary cardboard guard above the timing chain, a rag between the head & firewall and tie the spark plug leads together, it's OK at idle. :)

I tried this when I was checking for oil getting to the rocker gear.

Was it getting oil ?
I might do that with mine and see if I can pin point where this noise is coming from

I found no oil was coming out of the HLAs, and hence no running onto the timing chain. When I replaced the head gasket, I found something was blocking the oil feed to the rockers.

I feel silly,
And fixed the timing chain noise..." "
At first it was timing chain noise, after I reset the tentioner it went away. That arvo got my j3 back, in it went and away I went, but it sounded like I had taken on the rattle again, but the car was all over the place at idle and missing.
Checked my timing today, hahaha f**k would you look at that, the mark is pointing at the power steer pump. Wind it back to pos10 and she's all good.
Rookie mistake
