No you dont have to use an XR8 transmission, just need to use a transmission from a V8, not a 6 cylinder.

Did you get the transmission actually checked by a pro?

.. and by No gears -- do you mean that it just sits in 3rd, or nothing at all?

If it sits in 3rd it can be the trans selector switch on the side of the gearbox - fairly common esp. in V8's where theres more heat near it.

Yep, I had this problem once I had extractors installed, the transmission specialist fitted his diagnostic tool and got the code, he stated the selector switch was fried so I got a new selector switch installed with heat shielding around the selector switch.
