issue. engine hunts while holding a steady speed more noticeable in lower gears.
- the engine also has a complete miss or cough when accelerating hard but runs fine if driving sedately idles ok and revs out ok with no load.
repairs. 1 changed fuel filter. 2 cleaned out plennum and throttle body inc air flow meter air temp.
3 checked plugs (new) the gap was 1.00mm and changed to 1.30mm as per book.
4 checked fuel pressure 30psi at idle and with the vac line off the fuel reg it is 39-40psi.
I was told if the cam angle sensor is warn it could creat these symptoms the ute has done 274000kms.
help!!!

Coilpacks, maybe? If you know someone else with an AU that you can swap over to see if it makes a difference, it'd save you from going out and purchasing new parts to find they don't make a difference. Also check your leads aren't arcing out anywhere, cracked boots, etc.

cheers i have a spare coil pack but only one will chuck it on. checked all leads and tested them all around 3-4 ohms. also disconnected battery for hour or so and tried after that the surging is still there but maybe a fraction less hard to tell.
It f@rt around a bit if you are a gear to high and accelorate a little harder than you should for that gear if you know what im on about.

It sounds like it could be MAF-related. You said you cleaned it? Did you remove the electrics and spray them with contact cleaner? Neither of the hotwires are damaged? It's definitely plugged in properly?

I did clean it and the wires are intact the plug is clean (now) and all pins tight.
I have a mate with a scan tool so might see what codes we get once i get over there.
cheers.
anoghter guy said that poor earthing for the oxy sensors (?hego) can cause the surging.
dunno.

Scanning for codes is the best thing you can do. Hopefully something shows up and you get it sorted.

i know when i had my ef xr, when was getting close to service schedule it used to display similar symptons. Due to some fuel particles in oil.

Its about 35kms overdue on the oil change bout to do it.
I disconnected the oxy sensors and took it for a drive and the ute stopped surging straight away thinking this may be the cause does any one know the specs on the sensors so i can run my multi meter over them first to be sure to be sure.

still having troble with this ute have now replaced the fuel pump and my fuel pressures are still around 29psi idol and vac dissconnected 35psi ish still hunts at steady throttle unless you un hook o2 sensors. and have still been having those misfires at higher revs notice it more when you give it and change gear and give it again. at one stage while overtaking a truck it lost heaps of power and was running rough then when i slowed for a town and came out the other side had all its power back. have also replaced the coil packs and no different. what the. is it possible the fuel reg has s**t itself a bit?
