Gday everybody
Got a stupid annoying steering problem on my fairmont. The steering wheel has about 5degrees free turn each way before it actually starts moving the wheels (while the car is turned on and off). The things i've done to try and fix this prick of a problem are All ball joints, New bearings, replaced brake pads and rotors while i was at it. none of that has fixed it, last thing i can think of is the steering rack is screwed and needs replacing, if it is the rack is stuffed would an EB rack fit as i have an EB wreck out in the paddock just sitting there rusting away. any other suggestions as to what it could be? cheers guys |

Likely culprits are tie rod ends, steering rack, or intermediate shaft. Have someone turn the wheel back and forth from one end of free play to the other while you watch what's going on under the bonnet and under the car. With that much movement, you should be able to see where one part is moving and the next is not.

have a look at the intermediate shaft. They tend to have a bit of play, especially for it's age, it's a likely culprit.

Had a look today everything is moving down to the rack but anything after the rack doesnt move until it engages properly so it must be that.
