Hi Guys,
I am looking into entering into the targa tasmania with my AU2 XR8. Has anyone had any experience in running a similar car? I want to ask what needs to be done to the car for compliance and competiveness, and any other stuff. I'm assuming an AUXR8 would be early modern class? Thanks heaps. |

have you thought about doing the Targa west first?
its in your home state and cost half as much to enter

Early Modern is correct. I have done 2 Targa's as Navi, you want to have a tight fresh car. PLENTY of rubber, like 4 or 5 sets minimum. First one I did was in a 73 RSR 911 in a mates car. (I wish I owned it) We pretty much did a set of tyres a day. To be remotely competative your going to need to look for something like the Kuhmo KU36's or Falken Azenis or toyo Proxies and hope it does not rain.
As Regie suggested, I would start some rallying in your home state, its a good way to start to shake down the car and get an idea on setup. Targa's are where you go to break cars. If you intend on using the XR8 as your daily, get another car. what gets built for targa would be horrendous for everyday use, likewise, whats built for everyday use would be horendous for Targas. It is hardly the event that a few bucks on suspension, some fresh rubber and machined brakes would be suitable for. if it wears out, better take 2 or 3 of them for targa. We actually had to replace a set of torsion bar bushes. The car was built fresh before the event with a shake down in the Alpine rally to bed it in. 1500km of targa and the torsion bars bushes were gone. they normally last for year! It not only costs alot of money to enter, its cost a hell of a lot more to be remotely competative. Just buy a second hand S2000 throw some go fast bits at it for ½ the price the same bits for a falcon cost and use that. much better competition car. plus you can use it for supersprints and plenty of other targa and gymkana events.
