There is a difference in the prices at Auto stores, from what I've found you can't say ones cheaper as some are cheaper in some areas but not in others.B
ut there's also a huge difference in what they stock, here we have Bursons, Sparco, Autobarn, Supercheap auto and Repco.
Supercheaps great for dirt cheap no-name-brand audio gear and seat covers.
Autobarn for audio and ricer products.
Bursons and Sparco, and more into replacement parts, similar to Repco but with a smaller range and that.
Then you've got Repco which has the most stores and the biggest range, they basically do everything. The main reason why Repcos retail prices arn't that competitive is because most of there sales and revenue comes from the trade customers (which the other stores don't have). During the week probably 70% of sales is made up of tradies, each store has at least one delivery driver constantly dropping stuff off to the workshops and that. The stores also don't stock alot of the not so common stuff anymore and quickly get it in overnight on orders.

The biggest lesson I've learnt working at Repco is don't be affraid to haggle or ask for discount. Basically if you just hint that your a tradie, or ask for a discount, most of the employees'll give you trade price of better, it doesn't bother them at all. There's a certain limit to how low we can knock the price down, provided you don't go past it, no one cares or will say a thing.

If you want grunt from a cam then you'll need to get a radical cam as opposed to a mild one.

Just something to always remember:

The following three words can never go together, you can have two of them but you will never have the thrid:

GOOD - CHEAP - FAST

ie. It can be fast and cheap, but it wont be good
or It can be good and fast, but it wont be cheap.

IMO, cams provide more when used in conjunction with other mods. First, let that engine breathe!
Open up the intake and exhaust as they're usually quite restrictive in stock form. From there you can work the head - you can shave it, port it, open up the valves if you'd like... and then installing a cam will provide more noticeable grunt.
