When I remove the fuel cap I notice a build up of pressure releasing.....The car is a EL Fairmont wagon. Could it be that the fuel cap is buggered or is it something else?

Excellent. Someone was telling me there was some sort of valve in the charcoal canister that could be causing it because it shouldn't be under pressure.....But I like your answer better.

there is a purge solinoid on the vac line that runs from the bbm to charcoal canister..
its just below the airbox just above the chasis rail.. |

at certain times the ecu will or should open the purge solinoid to allow manifold vacuum to evacuate pressure and fumes from the charcoal canister..
but the solinoid my be buggered? |

If the solenoid is buggered will that damage the fuel system in any way? Is there a way to bypass the solenoid?

it wont damage anything except for possably causing a bit off extra pressure in the tank.
mines like that and hasnt had any other problems.. |

I've got a spare fuel cap so I might put that on and see if it makes any difference....Not expecting it to but worth a shot I guess just in case the one currently on it is buggered.

yeah all 3 of my e series sedans have this and my mums fagna does it, ive noticed if you run the car low on petrol it tends to do it worse

The cap itself should vent excess pressure, that's why unleaded caps click, unless they are diesel in which case the tank is constantly vented. The purge solenoid is just for emissions and as troyman described is only operated at certain times. In theory if you don't drive in a fashion that allows that purge off (such as only short trips) then the solenoid won't operate anyway. It's not a safety feature, more a tree hugging device.

If the cap is holding in the pressure, then there is nothing wrong with your car as they are non venting. Check the purge solenoid, may not be working. Tank will build up pressure on a hot day and some times not vent before you open the tank, nothing unusual. |
