Hi Guys,
I need a bit of help. I am converting a GLi to Fairmont (I know, I've got too much time on my hands) and have used the doco on here for installing the Elec window winders (using original looms ect). Issue is that the part number mentioned for the door rivets (the metal ones with thread in the middle, used for screwing the door handles on) does exist, but Ford does not sell them anymore. (I actually found that you can get nearly nothing anymore from Ford for E series!! ). Any ideas on to where I could get these rivets? Pref in Perth, if eastcoast it needs to be a mob that posts them. Cheers for your help! |

Cheers for the reply, but they are rivets. You cannot get them out of the door. Once installed they stay there. If I was able to get them from the wreckers I would have... I have already been thinking about welding nuts in the holes ect, but rather not. Anyone?? |

Anyone?? that may be the only way as they where aluminium,or use a 50mm sq plate or flat bar.5-6mm thick, aluminium and drill and tap the hole you need, use 2-4 rivets fix the plates to the door,no welding and still strong, bit of a pita, but a way around it.or swap the doors to fairmont

Cheers for the replies so far. I've been told by Ford themselves Wurth might still be able to supply them. I'll check this in the next few days. If they do have them I'll be able to finally fit the door cards.
Good idea on the plate, have been thinking of a similar solution, but factory would be preffered. Let's see how we go! Cheers again! |

When I put ef/el fairmont door trims in my ed I ended up using plastic screw grommets
10G in "Champion Panel Packs" available from Auto One. Only problem I had was one rear door was an early model ea/eb and didn't have the rivet holes, so I just screwed the armrest directly to the door. These plastic grommets are the same as the plastic grommets that hold the ed interior door handles in place. Hope this helps. Cheers Geoff |

Hi guys,
Cheers for all the comments. Finally I got 8 for only $1.30!!! Go to any fastners place and you'll get a huge choice of scrivets, rivet nuts or whatever people like calling them... Works a treat and the door handles are nice and tight! PS: the fairmont conversion (from GLi) nearly complete!!! Only need to hook up the last bits for the ABS and I am done! Also got my XR8 rims and tickford skirts ready and waiting to add on!!! Can't wait! Will leave that for another post. |

Unscrew the inside door handle the plastic screw grommets are used here. Round on the trim side square where it goes through the door skin.
Good to hear you got your rivetnuts, Great score at 0.16 cents each or so, as I said I couldn't get any from ford, obsolete, They also wanted to charge me $5 something each for the 5mm rivets for the power window motor bracket. I paid $5 a pack for nuts and bolts. Cheers Geoff |

we used to use somthing very similar at work .. they where called "huck rivets"
Attachment: File comment: Getting the torque on bolts right is very tricky business for many companies. Huck fasteners mistake-proof this problem using a hybrid: half “pop-rivet,” half bolt. The tension on the bolt is created in a linear fashion and the “nut” is clamped in place and the excess bolt length is cut off. The only drawback is that removal involves cutting the bolt off and installing a new one after repairs

Hi mate,
Thanks for the reply. It's been a while since I worked on this. Since I have resolved the issue by getting some of the rivets from a fastner place and tightening them with a bolt and nut. Squeezing the rivet in-between worked a treat. To make sure they stay where they are I tacked one side of the rivet to the door with a welder. They are sturdy as now. I could have gone out and bought an actual screw rivet gun, but they cost a fair bit. Cheapest I could find was 100 dollars and I could not justify buying one just for the 8 rivets. Cheers! |
