Hmmm, power steering. Nice when parking, but even at legal speeds on country roads, it does have a vague feel about it.
It got me to wondering; if you disconnect the belt for the power steering, how much affect will it have? Will it be a total pain for parking, but nice on country roads, or a disaster all round?
Also, how much does power steering affect fuel economy?

Which car are we talking ? Ef,el,au . If u remove the belt u won't have a water pump, aircon, alternator . However if it's a ea,eb, ed, u can remove it without affecting anything else.

It'll be harder than trying to steer a car without power steering fitted in the first place...biggest pain in the a***. Also as mentioned above, the power steering pump runs off the serpentine belt on EF onwards...so you either can't do it, or you have to find a smaller length belt to suit...

Also I believe it will be classed as illegal because the car was fitted with power steering. if it's not functioning, your car is rendered unroadworthy...but I could be wrong there.

correct its a serpintime belt i believe and it controls everything alternator , water pump , aircon etc also i believe the ea-ed is the same when my friends belt went on his ed everything went aircon water pump alternato r etc not sure about his power steering though

paul may i ask why you ant to disconnect your goodies ie aircon and power steering ??? without these you may as well be driving a XA or soemthing and to anwser your question i do not believe power steering affects your economy

would actualy be beter to just drive an xa like phong said it would be easier to steer a car that was made without power steer, it takes more turn lock to lock to turn a car without power steer but because of this its easier to steer than a car with the power steering that has now been disconnected

Thanks for the replies.
So, I won't do it!
As for why, as I said, I feel the power streering gives a 'disconncted' feel at speed.
It's not a deal-breaker, but I do like to feel what's happening under the wheels (as in my old car), and the power steering robs some of that. It adds in other places, of course,
As for the air-con, I just don't use it, and I believe it robs about 10% fuel economy? So, if I do not use it...

i think i read somewhere the el gt came out with speed sensitive steering, so what happend is the faster you get the better the feel of the steering I THINK, maybe the ghia got it aswell? im not sure

Pretty sure they were options on lower models, but Fairmont Ghia, LTDs and EL GT got Speed Sensitive Steering switches (SSS).

If you are really keen, you can find yourself a SSS rack and high pressure hose. Steering will be tighter when at speed and really soft when cruising the parking lot.
