Hi,
Have just done a headgasket on an EF 6 cyl and can't get the gear back on the cam. The gear and chain are tied together on either side with cable ties. Last time I did this was when I did the lifters and it went back on with just a little tension. Can the tensioner get stuck out? It moves in against the spring, until there is about half inch sticking out toward the chain. I thought it may go further in so there is less tension. Any ideas would be helpfull at this stage. Jim |

Jim You need to totally take all presure of the timing guide, on the side of the timing case, 14mm bolt, undo that, then put in a 3mm allen key ... you will feel the timing guide come looser Don't forget to tighten it again afterwards. P.S. Welcome to Fordmods! |

Thanks for that.
I already pulled the 14mm bolt out and thought that would release the pressure, so after reading your post I got out the torch and mirror and spied the 3mm allen head you referred to. Looks a bit strange in there though. Not just a screw head as I expected to find. I read some other posts where they said don't remove the retaining bolt/pin because the tensioner will drop or something. Is there anything to watch for as you loosen off the tension with a 3mm allen key? Jim |

When we did a cam...a couple of times. We didn't loosen off the tensioner at all. We just the cam bolt through and the lifted while tightening... worked.
Cheers
