Is it worth getting a transmission cooler for my ba xr6?? If so is it to run in a partnership with the one in the radiator or seperate?

Do away with the in-radiator one and run the outside one independently.if yours hasn't already been fixed-BAs had issues with transmission coolers letting water into them and wrecking the trans, then you will be safer also!

Will it be as effective as the water cooled one?

PWR make a BA specific cooler which is setup to bypass the in radiator standard one. All most a must have for all BA owners. The BFs were a little better and used a heater exchange which attaches to the side of the block on the passenger side (best seen when the car is up on a hoist)

just dont get one thats to large like i did, i got a 300x300 cooler and ran it without the radiator cooler and found the trans was not warming up and was not allowing the torque converter to lock up unless i had driven more than an hour due to the trans being to cold..
i now run it through both and no more problems.. if you dont drive on the freeway you wont notice it.. |

Yeah mine is the same even with the 4sp. I took some pics of mine in my thread when we replaced it recently. Put in the turbo territory one which are known for being more durable so hopefully be all sweet for the next 100 odd kms

point is, which troyman even proved, a heat exchanger in line with a cooler is a good idea. Then in theory the system works more like a regulated radiator system providing constant temp trans fluid no matter what conditions.
Problem is the factory radiator.. I'm sure a good quality aftermarket unit would be fine for more kms. I got told those ktm heat exchangers have been known to fail to but not as often as ba radiators. Everythings got a lifespan. Unfortunately late model car part lifespans are diminishing in general.

Exactly right mate, which is why i just replaced my exchange for paranoia that it was going to fail

I'm pretty sure fords fix for the leaking plastic thermostat housing was to delete the thermostat... as the coolant is already regulated coming from the engine thermostat anyway.

so do all transmission coolers mount there... and i was thinking of completely removing the radiator one... ie. capping it off and only running the aftermarket
