Hi people i just put a cam in my car (1993 eb ford falcon) and while i was there a new timing chain tensioner. I put it in and releast it but now i have a timing chain grinding noise only on idle. Dont know what it could be the chain guides look fine everything in the right spot nothing broken. The noise goes away high in the revs. Sounds like the chain could still be abit loose? quesion is am i supose to release the tensioner fully or? i unlocked it once with the ellen key like not all the way untensioned if you know what i mean. Should i release it fully or do something else thought i would find out from the people who have done it before. sorry hard to explain.

what sort of grinding a constant grinding or an occasional grinding like if it was slapping around?

With the roker cover off and the engine at top dead for the he'll of it pull out the tentioner plug so you can get the Allen key up there, now grab you're 17mm and turn the cam bolt anticlockwise slightly as turning the tentioner, this puts the slack on the tentioner side, stopped all my rattle,

Were all the bolts done up for the rocker gear???...and not over tightened?
Did that cam require upspec valve springs??? How many K's on the engine???....does it require all new guides??? Just some things to think about after you recheck the tensioner.

Thanks for getting back. 180 thousand on the clock its a wade 1636 cam so no upgrade on springs its a xr6 so its got the ticky valve springs. All the guides look ok from what i can see. When i put the tensioner in it uncliked one turn. Do i need to release the whole thing like in the fully unlocked position?

They are hydrolic, uses the engines oil pressure to push out the tentioner. on most cars.
Some (including mine) don't like to push the chain right over. This is why you do what I said above, to make sure. To check for tightness grab the chain on the intake side of the cam gear and lift it up, if it looks like you could almost move it across another tooth it's not released propped (or broken guides, streched chain). |

Chain feels ok to me i cant lift it off the sproket at all. But still abit of flex around the guides.

Have a really good look at the guides, double check all you're rocker gear is tight, may be valve springs or could be pinging
