So,
my power steering pump in the 4.0L EL Fairmont Ghia has decided to give up and leave this Earthly realm. It's making all the brilliant whiring and grinding noises you'd expect when it has little to no fluid running through it. What I want to know, is what is the best way to go about fixing it? I can get the seals for next to nothing, but I'm not sure if I want to get the pump I have now recon'd, or if I should just get a new pump and put that in. It's a daily driver and would be a bit irritating if I had to sit around waiting for the pump to get redone. Anyhow... it'll all depend on how much a new pump would cost too. I may as well do my fan belts while I'm there... Thanks in advance guys, Russ.

Hey mate, if it were me I would check out a wrecker and score a warranty with a replacment, or go somewhere cheap like pick a part and take a gamble. Its easy over here, you can take parts in for comparison and they put a little mark on. So take your pump, a paint pen or whatever they use and score a freebie. Get the car on the road asap. Then if you are keen while the car is running get your unit reconned.

I don't think so? Mine is held on by three bolts on the front (You have to get to these through the pulley) and 1 nut on the back. High pressure hose is tightend with a nut and the LP house has a hose clamp that can be undone with a screw driver. I would either drain the fluid at the column or move the pump off the bracket before undoing the house to save your altenator etc.

...if by special jig you mean a decent spanner and socket set, then yes...
It's a few nuts and bolts to remove the alternator. To pull the thing apart you might need a pulley remover (the proper one...), but you can get away with removing the annoying cir-clip on the inside of the shaft.

Yep, just hit the wreckers for one.
Pick n Payless have heaps. Just pick one that still has some fluid in it and the cap is still on the top. Removing the pulley to rebuild it is the really hard part, which is why it is easier to find another second hand one. Ebay has a stack of reco or new pumps starting at $100 so check that out too. Cheers BenJ

Turns out it was the sender unit.
I now have to do a fluid flush on it, so this question still remains, How many bottles of the Penrite Ford Power steering fluid will I need?

I just used one bottle...can't remember if it was a 500mL or 1000mL. I used Valvoline Power steering fluid Formula F...higher temp rating than normal.
