has anyone tried doing this using one of the seal kits on ebay? they say that they come with intructions, im just wondering if its do-able using normal tools and general know-how.

Just have to keep the parts super clean, watch out for metallic particles, and bob's ur aunty.

Just did my Xr8's c2 pump last night. Not too hard. A 400mm F clamp, assorted punches, small screwdrivers, couple of sockets, the seal kit & not too hard. There's a few vid's on youtube in regards to 6cyl pumps, and there is a few tech write up's out there in internet land on the v8 pumps.
Hardest part is removing the pulley, there are special tools to do that, yep I bought that kit. Cheers ToranaGuy

i had to use a g clamp, a punch/ modified small screw driver and a spanner and a soft hammer and being very very clean is the key, make sure everything is spotless when putting it back together, use brake cleaner as it drys itself off after spraying it on, i rebuilt my pump a week or so ago and no leaking from what i can see, best $17 i ever spent.
for the 6 cyl you dont have to remove the front pulley you can get away with removing a cirlip from inside the pump and the shaft comes out the front of the pump with the pulley, but it is a f**k around to remove/re install this circlip

You can't use an eyed circlip, it has square edges, the original circlip is basically high tensile wire curved in a circle.
They are very easy to remove, as there is a small hole in the pump body that lines up with the circlip groove. Just use a pin punch to push the circlip in and a small flat screwdriver to flip it out. Another thing to look out for is " Chatter marks " in the outer vane assembly.....if they are there, it will be noisy in operation.

Yeah, I keep thinking he's talking about the larger one - there is a hole in the housing there to assist in removing it.

 Not really any fancy tools, 400mm F clamp, 19mm deep impact socket, small screwdriver, a punch set, and a few things you don't see such as the oil can to oil things as you reassemble, the air compressor & brake cleaner to clean things....  There was a bit of wear in this pump, will be a bit noisy, like most v8 pumps are, but it won't leak anymore, the biggest problem is leakage! I need to see if I can pickup another pump to fit new vanes & a new bearing to somewhere down the track, this one had a bit of wear, but not too bad. Cheers ToranaGuy

Externally they are quite different, same basic way to rebuild them tho. I need to rebuild a 6cyl pump soon, I should take some pics of that too.

It's extremely important to thoroughly clean the pump before you even attempt to open it. You don't want to contaminate internal components.
