Ok so, new years day, I was pulling up to a mates place and as i was i lost powersteering and heard a strange noise, My belt slipped off. Something simple i decided to leave it untill i wasnt partying.
Now, My old man and me got the belt back on, But after starting her up and letting it sit, we seen the belt start to slip off again. Heres a top view of the front of the engine, Does the harmonic balancer look like it's too far out to you guys? We thought that might be the belt problem as the belt kept slipping behind and off it. Second problem, In trying to see if the harmonic balancer was the problem, my father thinks he may have broken a sensor like object on the front of the block. Can anyone tell me what it is, And if a broken one would stop the engine from starting, It turns over fine, just no go. Thanks in Advance for any help Frankie

Your outer part of the harmonic balencer could be off centre throwing the belt off get a new one if this is the cause. That sensor at the top is called a crank angle sensor.

We're fairly certain the out and inner are aligned and that the outer is not slipping or anything. I don't know much my self, but it looks to me from the top view that its out too far. Thanks for the suggestion.

The center bolt is tight, We're not sure if tight enough yet. (thats how the sensor got damaged)
When we got the belt back on and started it up it ran good for a few mins it then started to come forward off the bottom of the tensioner, and slipped off the back off the Harmonic Balancer. I've not got anything to compare to see if the balancer is too far forward. As thats the only conclusion i could come to with out much mechanical knowledge. I've never had any problem in relation to this in the almost 2 years I've had the car.

Can you get any more tension on it to see if it will press on any further?. But dont kill the bolt.If all good there should be ok. After that id be checking the pullys.

My dad said the bottom pulley on the tensioner may have dead bearings, as thats where the belt seems to first move off (turning on an angle or something retarded) We where gonna try and see if it could maybe go on further, Just worried I'll wreck something lol
Could a rooted pulley put if off like that?

Hey Bud,
Just a tip too, make sure the new balancer has the ring on the back that looks like an ABS ring. If that aint there and you fit the balancer = guaranteed not to start as the crank sensor picks up a signal from that ring. I only say this because the EL doesnt need one because it doesnt run coil pack like the EF. Also if push come to shove and you cant loosen the bolt on the balancer i did this a few years back to my XF. Its rough but it done the trick, I struggled like all F**k to loosen the bolt on my XF to no avail spent about 3 hours trying to get it off. Got p****d with it so i went to bed and the next morning it just dawned on me. Get a breaker bar with the socket on it and put it onto the bolt, rest the bar against the passeger side chassis rail and make sure it cant slip this is vital. Get a friend to just hit the key very briefly which will turn the motor clockwise from the front and force the breaker bar down which will crack the bolt. It worked for me as i had no help and was outta luck. If you feel confident to do it dont hesitate. Remember its just advice not a concrete solution. Best of luck with it bro. Cheers Joel
