hey guys, my mate braught his xr6 out today, and pulled the rocker cover off and the number 1 lifter has colapsed, we're going to use a 2nd hand set for now but he doesn't have the money to get new, and his chain guide has snapped off,
i've herd of people running without theses but he seems to think that it will cause the chain to go slack? the motor also needs a head gasket as i could see the water in the rsator bubbling |

The head gasket kit will probably cost more than the timing chain set. As the sump needs to come off to get the bottom guide on, he may as well lift the whole engine out and fix them both at the same time. Much easier than lying on the ground to undo bolts and jacking up the engine for clearance.

IMO I'd tell him to save up and do what Shortshift suggested. It will easier and faster (IMO) to get it done out of the car.
