Recently my BA GT boss 290 has had this ticking noise on start up which lasts for a second or 2, doesn't happen every time I start it, maybe once a week which concerns me as the motor only has 19,000 ks on it. A mate has had the same problem with his boss 260 but happends quite frequently. Any ideas, is this something to be concerned about. If it was a e series I'd say lifters but I'm not sure how these motors work.

Cheers.

could be the timing chain tensioners or it could be from lack of driving i'd say do an oil change and take it out for a drive and see what that does

Is there a way for me to test these tensioners or better to take it to ford? I recently changed the oil to the recommended thickness and it made no difference, although I do think the recommended oil is quiet thin.

Sounds like it may have plastic tensioners. You don't mention if the engine is original or what year month it is. Later Mk2's had the steel ones fitted as std.

Yes, they do have HLA's. They live in the head, under one end of the rocker.
They have 4 tensioners, one for each chain, on a DOHC engine.

It is an original motor, 2003 model early to mid series one, same as my mates xr8, so plastic tensioners could be the issue? What would cause these plastic tensioners to be noisy on start up? Just a s**t design...

The plastic tensioners started to erode overtime, enabling the oil that sits in them to push past the piston/seals etc.
the end result being that when you start the car, it needs to pump oil back to the tensioners and any other areas where the oil has run from, its these few seconds that you hear the rattle that the oil is being pumped.

There are only 2 tensioners that typically need replacing, not 4 as mentioned above.

Cheers for the help, is this something that I should fix ASAP to prevent motor damage or is it more of a annoying sound than a problem?
