your base idle is set by an adjusting screw on the thottle body (usually has a bit of white or blue silicone on it to stop people tampering with it). where your throttle cable wraps around the actuator on the throttle body, this actuator (in the closed position) rests against a little screw which is your idle adjusting screw. according to the workshop manual idle speed for any i6 or v8 au should be between 700 - 800rpm.
