If you pull the motor or drop the k frame no worries.
You can't take the sump off with the engine in or the k frame in unles you cut the k frame. You can't take the timing case off without dropping the sump otherwise the bottom chain guide will fall into the sump and If it dosnt then it's still a real prick to get back in. Why are you taking it off? |

Bro, there is no bottom timing cover
There is not top timing cover. Only the timing chain cover. 1 piece. So do you mean it's leaking at the bottom of the timing case around the sump or maybe the crank shaft seal. |

It's a big job male sure you have the gaskets and a tube of high temp red sealant or equivalat.
The head bolts are torque to yeild so if you go the head off route youll need new head bolts, vrs kit, better get you're head re surfaces whilst you're there. You'll more then likely need to drop the sump, can only go about a inch with the engine in, to get the bottom chain guide in. Remeber to release the timing chain tentioner an take out the 10mm at the top right or you'll brake another guide. Take note of wich timing case bolts have sealant on then cos they need it on there or it'll leak. Honestly if its only slight I'd Leave it. What's a slight leak? |

you don't need to remove the k-frame or the engine to do the timing case. It is however much easier with the engine out...
Anyways you can remove the engine mount bolts, lift the engine up a little bit and drop the sump that way. Make sure you remove the thermos, any anciliaries and the timing chain tensioner before you start lifting the motor up. If you're really keen, you can remove the radiator too to give you more room to work with and while it's out, give it a flush. When putting things back together, use new gaskets and use a bit of high temp gasket maker at the head end...hard to explain where but this image should suffice. Obviously the picture shows with the head off, but where the yellow marks are, is where you should put a strip of gasket maker, but since you can't put a strip on the block end, just put some on the timing case and it should seal enough...so I hope. considering the tight space you have to work with, it is much easier to pull the engine out, but obviously it will take longer since you have to remove the transmission, and that can be a pain at times too.

recently did the timing chain on mine..
unbolted the sump (leaving in the rear 2 screws loosly) so it dropped down a bit.. didnt lift the engine up and didnt remove the head... time consuming job...used plenty of silicon in the corners of the cover, no leaks so far..

Not sure why one would need to remove the head to do a timing case though...unless you're doing the head, then yes do timing case at the same time.

It's the correct way to do it.
Guess you don't have to remove the head or take the sump fully off but if you don't wanna do it twice. |
