am about to swaP out my btr with another and this is the first trans I've pulled out and installed, I have a workshop manual to help me.Has anyone got any advice to help the transfer go as smooth as possible? Any tricks of the trade to could help?

Get a BIG trolley jack and a block of wood to support the transmission, Make sure the car is properley supported on axle stands, dont loose anything, make sure you do all the bolts up tight, and have paitence.

you with need a really long 3/8 extention to get to the top bolts

I use 1/2" with two 300mm extensions and a universal for those top bolts. They are fun either way. Don't try dropping it onto yourself, I've done a few T5's and BW 3speeds that way and thought the 4 speed couldn't be that bad.... I near busted an o-ring that day lol Few other members I know would agree.
Having an output shaft yolk helps to keep it clean.

i was reading that majority of the bolts have to be done a certain tensions, is this vitally nessasary?
i dont have a torque wrench and wasnt gonna buy one if i dont have too

If you drop the Cat off, it lets the engine drop further at the back to make it easier to get at the top bolts on the bellhousing.
Use never-seize on the torque converter spigot, and use Loctite threadlocker on the tailshaft bolts, and torque converter to flexplate bolts.

I found it the easiest to get the top bolts with a ring/open end spanner from on top of motor. Had my knees on radiator support and lent over the motor. Must be done before you tilt the motor back but easy to do. Starter motor is hard also need 3/8 socket set with a few different size extensions. Use anti-seize on every bolt except the crank to flex plate and flex plate to convertor bolts. I use loctite 277 on them.

That one damn starter motor bolt.... lol everyones got their weapon of choice.
For the gearbox bolts I also put a bottle jack under the harmonic balancer to get a bit of extra tilt, just don't push it too far or you will be changing engine mounts to.

every single time i have done a gearbox removal and replacement, i have used a 2500kg jack with transmission jack adapter, that way no trying to lift the heavy things.....

I am an advocate for pulling the engine and box out as a complete unit, separating the old box and bolting up the replacement while it is all out of the car, then dropping the whole kit back in.
You can then check all the heater hoses, etc, and clean the engine bay if needed. Oh, and while the box is off the engine, replace the rear main seal while you have it apart. Should probably do the rear welsh plug too. Cheers BenJ

In hindsight I think there's a big cast block under there for the alternator if I recall, which is used, not the balancer itself
BenJ's option is the best long term option.
