As some of you may know I am in the process of putting a 302w from an ELxr8 into my 93 Toyota 4runner.
Whilst Im waiting on the bellhousing I might as well get as much of the wiring done as I can. I was given the factory auto ECU and engine bay wiring harness as part of the deal. At the end of the day I want a tuneable, engineerable option because further on down the track I hope to froce feed this engine. From what I understand these are my options. Smartlock eliminor with stock ecu, find a tcm and fit resistors or signal generator and neutral safety switch (not tuneable but gets me going and driveable without pulling timing) Smartlock eliminator with Manual map J3 or 1/4 horse. I like the real time tuning of the 1/4 horse but don't knoq if my ecu is supported, also don't know if I xan disable auto trans control. J3 with a manual map and security removed (can this even be done). I know that with the 1/4 horse you can disable theft but the system developer will not activate this due to potential thefts by refitting ecus to target vehicles. Aftermarket ecu (Haltech, EMS, or Microtech) tucked up in the glove box with a dummy stocker and a few inches of wiring harness in the kick panel. Don't laugh as this is how many vehicles with aftermarket ecu's have passed engineering. As a side note, is there any aftermarket ecu that uses a maf instead of map for a load input. |

imo if you run an aftermarket ecu, do away with the maf its just a restriction, and go with a map and tps tune..
you can run the el 5.0 ecu and by running a j3 chip you can dissable smartlock.. im not sure if there is any need to worry about resistors, as the tcm is seperate and the j3 can also make the ecu manual.. |

You could move to an AU EEC-V (which Im assuming is more likely to be supported by 1/4horse) - this also gives you the benefit of coil packs and SEFI.
