the main issue will be the wear in the centre and hemisphere.
if the lsd cone is bottomed out in the hemisphere the centre cone will need to be machined and shims fitted between the springs and cone to make up for what has been removed.. otherwise a new centre is needed.. |

if you dont have enough HP to turn both wheels its only going to wear out the centre quicker.
More HP will solve the loose LSD too! |

So what has to be machined? The diff housing or inside The centre ?

So what has to be machined? The diff housing or inside The centre ? Troyman explained above. The Idea of reverse figure 8's isn't to be a smart a**. Its to have the cones run backwards in their cup, the oil swirl on the cone will attempt to drive the oil out, and wearing the cone to the cup (hemisphere) It has actually worked only mildly, LSD's of this setup tend to click and clank when worn and this can 'patch it'. If the cup, has worn past its service life, you can machine the cones down to fit but only minimal. If they're worn too much the hemisphere needs to be replaced. Most reco shops will just swap left cone for right lap them in and stiffen the springs. At the end of the day, it's Limited Slip, Not a locker. -self explanatory. The BW diffs do not last long if miss treated, it can only take as little as one burnonut and if a single wheel grips and you keep it going, the cone will wear pretty fast.

Yeah, but the associated methodoligy is, putting it in reverse Undoes anything that has been done. i got told to reverse for about a kilometer to tighten up the bands in my mazda auto box, didnt do squat, altho i was 11 years of age and had been goin round dads farm slamming it into reverse so the car would spin out sideways because the handbrake never worked, and N bombing it on old tree stumps This is completely off topic but I love this story...used to drive an XF cab years ago - last fare was to Gumeracha (in Adelaide hills, maybe 20 k? from Adelaide) - anyway, dropped the passengers, reversed across the carpark, put the car in drive and... nothing. Would only work in reverse...so..reversed it back to the depot on the other side of the city, I dunno must have been at least 25 k's...got hassled by cops at one point (ever been pulled over windscreen to windscreen? lol..) but they just wanted to ask what the hell I was doing... once I explained that I'd already come around 20 k's they let me go...not actually a crime to reverse long distances...OK, back to topic...pass the cones and LSD...

hey guys after a bit of advice (without starting a new thread) if possible.
does anyone know the deal with getting backlash settings adjusted. my lsd is still super tight but when i went from auto to manual the backlash is very obvious. is this something that CAN just be adjusted or is it something that requires a rebuild? cheers, adam |

You adjust backlash by shimming the side carrier bearings , then lock up the pinion gear and use a dial indicator to check backlash on the crown gear .
While your at it check the pinion gear preload with a inch pound torque wrench

If you have a dial indicator and the specs which are in the workshop manual go for it .
If you have 2mm of back lash and specs require 1mm add a 1mm shim to the left carrier bearing to move it closer into the pinion gear . Just an example
