Apologies if this has been covered before - started searching but no luck.
Did an oil change, and have added too much - oil level is now well above the 'OK' limit; infact, it's the same height above the 'OK' section as the section itself. Is this too much?

I like to keep my oil level a tad above but yours sounds a bit too much. just quickly undo the sump bolt for a few secs and drain some out. Will take no more than a few mins.

Yeah, thought I may have to.
Will go and do it now. Thanks for that. Oh, I followed the owner's manual; it said 5.5 litres, and I put in five, figuring it would be a tad low.

did you replace the filter, and did you run the engine before checking the oil?

another option is to just change the filter, the filter will hold about 500mls,
so replacing it will remove that from the engine... |

Did not replace the filter this time. I'll be replacing it each oil change form now on. It's only about $6, so a no-brainer, really.
When adding the new oil, figured the old oil filter would hold about half a litre, and since the recc. amount in the manual was 5.5 litres, reckoned the five litres I added would bring it up to about the right level. Hence my suprise when t did not. Yes, I did run the motor first before checking the level. Anyway, undid the sump bolt yesterday and drained a little out, and it's now just a millimetre above the top 'OK' mark. Interestingly, there wasn't much in the pan...should have measured it to see how much to be accurate, but at the very most, think it was 500ml. Looked about 300-400ml. Still, even if there is some sort of problem (i.e. the dipstick has been changed?), it's only a minor error, and the car now has nearly five litres of new oil. Once again, many thanks for the advice.

500ml is a fair wack more. Seing the level is 1L.
Had a guy with a au, 1500ml too much and was seeping oil out of the sump, timing case and rockercover pretty quick |

Just got a haynes manual, and it says that the amount is 4.5lt without oil filter removal.
So, that's where the difference is; the owners manual that came with the car said 5lt without oil filter removal, this one says 4.5lt.

I've found that if you leave them to drain for ~20 mins they take around 5 to the mark but I usually let mine drain for a few hours and it needs closer to 5.5L.

I've found with the 6pot falcons, that if you change the oil and filter, you throw 5 litres of oil in and off you go for another service period.
Machinery is usually equipped with a dipstick for a reason, every piece differs. I'm pretty sure every engine, gearbox and diff oil capacity stated by manufacturers is nominal, and dipstick/site hole theory applies overall. I prefer to run mine a little over full in some cars to compensate for plenty of hard driving and/or off level work. Anywhere in the 'OK' field will be fine for 98% of vehicles.
