Gday
Just bought an NF Fairlane and filled the fuel tank up for the first time today. Filled it right to the top, and the trip computer is saying: Range: 382km Average: 14.1L/100km. Now I am lead to beleive the tank is 68L. So that would mean I have a range of 480km. 100km more than the trip computer reckons. Whats going on. Is the trip computer wrong, or is 380km to a tank pretty normal for an NF Fairlane? Regards |

I never look at the average anymore.
Always have it set on instant fuel economy, so you can see if you're actually guzzling. |

The range is just a quick calculation based on your current amount of fuel and your average/instant fuel figures. Mine usually says about 400km, but I usually always get more than that.

Mine (NC) always say 380-400 when I fill the tank. 480-520km later the fuel light comes on.....

I think it tells you the range due to the style of driving you do. Freeway driving increases the range, you can actually see the range go up. City driving chews ecconomy. Reset the odo, then check how many km's you are actually getting to a tank.
Probably wouldn't hurt giving the injectors a clean too. |

yeah i drove from Adel to melbourne in my ef i filled up in adelaide and it said 370km by the time i got to boardertown it said 540km even to i had done a few 100 already
its prob saying if the car has been sitting for a while. me ef is for sale and i start it everyday its got half a tank in it and it says 15km lol as it does not move |

As said before, reset all the parameters and see how that goes. Usually I reset the average L/100km and odometer then compare the trip computer to my calculations using the odometer and amount of fuel filled at the servo. Surprisingly my calculations with that of the trip computer are pretty similar...maybe 0.2L off max.

It sounds like your computer is under-estimating how much fuel is left in the tank. My AU does the same. It'll say 50kms to empty before I fill up, but I can tell from the amount of fuel required to fill the tank (so how much was already in it) it had at least 100-150 kms before running out. It's probably an intentional safety factor by Ford to prevent you from running empty in the middle of the Nullarbor.

most accurate is to just go off the odometre and work it out yourself, altho yes driving it will go up or down depending how much stop start driving you are doing or if your on the highway, mine used to go up pretty high on the highway with a full tank, just reset it and dont touch it for a few 100 kms and then have a read and it should be pretty acurate

Yep, as everyone else has said, it's more accurate to do it by odometer and full to empty. I just use the trip meter as a general indicator, but after a while you get know how much you have left by your gauge, although not entirely accurately. If you park with the right hand side of the car lower it will make your gauge go down a bit, so it's a nice surprise when you get onto level road and the gauge goes up. Anything to trick myself into thinking I have more petrol than I do.

Regards The trip computer uses what driving you are doing at the time.....if you just dawdle everywhere, it will give a nice reading.....if you drive it like you stole it, then the reading will be really bad. The Wife's Mit's Solara does the same thing. You really notice it on long trips.....fill the tank...says you can go 380 km.....400 km later and it says 200 km till empty.......just takes what info it can get at the time, and makes it what it is then.

Your distance to empty is calculated on recent fuel consumption, say last 10 to 20ks or so.
Your average fuel consumption is calculated from when it was last reset. It probably hasn't been reset in a while if ever, that is why it is different. I usually check and then reset all fields in the trip computer every time i fuel up just to see how my driving differs from tank to tank, unless i got on a long trip then i'll leave it till i get home to see what i averaged over however many tanks the trip took.

ive got an nc lane when i fill the big girl up and actually go somewhere on the highway it starts round 300 30 ks down the road it says 400 it just uses current driving conditions to tell you how far till you need a fill and obviously you go further on the highway than in the city but it works both ways if you just come off the highway after travelling a few hundred ks that number will drop rapidly round town as it adjusts to that driving condition
