Driving home from work today, something didn't feel right. Got home and noticed the front right wheel was f**k hot. As I suspected, the brake was stuck partially on.
Pulled the caliper off, but CANNOT remove the piston. I attached the caliper back to the brake line and pressed the brake perdal to force the piston out that way, but it only worked a little. The piston is now sitting out about 200mm, but no matter what I do, it won't come out any further. Anyone have any suggestions? Is it going to be worth dismantling it to service and repair it, if I had that sticky brake problem, or am I better of getting a replacement caliper? I NEED the car to be useable by friday as I'm heading to Sydney for the weekend. Any input much appreciated! |

My old man suggested I push it back in, then repeat the above process compressing it with brake pedal and repeat a few times, which will hopefully free it off.
he also said I should have done this before removing the brake line....never even thought EdIT: and he's saying it's not worth removing the piston all the way, as the kits just replace seals etc and are only really needed if they are leaking. The pistons will sometimes just seize up and just need freeing. |

That's probably as much as you can do - if you get stuck (no pun intended)I have my old set off the XR6 wagon - they are fine, just replaced them with a set cleaned up, painted and new seals.

Said it before and I'll say it again...is there anything you don't have spare?
I'll see what I can do to free it off tonight (in the bloody rain )... On the off chance I don't have any success, I'd be very keen on grabbing those spares off you if possible. As I said, I am in 100% need of the car on Friday as we're heading up to Sydney for the weekend and those would save my bacon if I'm not successful tonight. Are you coming to see Frank tomorrow arvo? If so, could you bring them with you, if I haven't replied in this thread by later tonight, detailing my jubilant success at freeing off said piston? |

No I'm not, but I'll put them in the car for Justin.

Well good news. I managed to get it freed off. I accidentally let it come out a little too far and it came out. Wasn't in great nick. A bit of corrosion. Gave it a good clean with a rag and wd40 which removed the worst of it.
Put it back together, bled the brake line and took it for a few spins, checking between each removing the wheel and looking for leaks etc. All seems fine. Just need to give the brake fluid a flush with new stuff as it's been in there god knows how long. Anyone know how much I'll need to do a full flush? |

I rebuilt a caliper today.....waiting on the 2nd piston for the other one.....I mediablasted them ( glass beads ) to clean them, painted them and installed the new piston and seals.
Easy job....when they are cleaned right up.
