Hey, I've been loosing enough coolant each month to turn on the low coolant sensor on my EF with EL 5 litre motor. Not loosing much, but it's enough that I have to top it up one to 2 times a month. Is this just NORMAL, or do I have some sort of issue? I've had the system pressure tested, and there's no leaks, I'm also running a new radiator, new thermostat, and I think, signifigantly, NEW HEADGASKETS. I've also got a new radiator cap on there. The temperature doesnt ever creep up it always stays on the lower side of normal (where I think it should sit) and yet I am still loosing water.
Cheers, Gab |

You're car's getting to the age where heater core failure is more likely. Pressure up your cooling system and leave it like that overnight on a dry concrete area. That should help show up where the leak is.

Same here mate. Mine's losing coolant from the water pump gasket, so check around yours. I'm planning to replace it and the timing cover soon, but that's a big job. BTW, my heater core has been leaking for years. I'll replace that too, someday...

I put a new core in my 6 cyl (same core) when I bought it 5 years ago... The new core lasted 18months... When I pulled the heatbox back out to replace a dodgy fan I noticed it then... So I figure it must have been from the summer months when the tap was closed and the still water was just sitting in it... And I've always run coolant... So now I run no heater tap so it always gets water circulation... Touch wood it hangs on for a bit longer...
I bet it is the core though... Cheers, Tim

Timing cover, water pump, heater core or intake manifold are the most likely culprits, head gasket rarely go on these engines.
As the above advice try pressure testing to cooling system and see if there are any visible leaks.

get yourself some degreaser & a pressure cleaner & then clean the hell out of your engine & engine bay from the top & the bottom.
You will then be able to work out (if not already) where your leak is coming from. If you have rusty coloured water then look for rusty water leaks, if your water is green/red (coolant) then look for coolant marks in the surrounding areas. The only other possibility as to where you could be losing water is from inside the engine however as far as i know V8 head gaskets are way better than their smaller 6cyl relatives. |
