I need to deepen the gearbox input shaft recess in the rear of the crankshaft by 5mm or so.
Is there an oil gallery in the crank anywhere near there or anything else to be wary of?

I am doing a motor conversion and the car's gearbox input shaft requires triming down, I would rather not do that but make room for it in the crank.

Need more details on what you are trying to do.......coz all I've got is the input shaft is too long by 5mm, and it's a Maverick/Patrol.....and a Conversion.....from what to what?
Not a lot to go on, eh?

5mm of the pilot on the input shaft would be WAY easier.

The only way its easier is if I angle grind the input shaft off in situ.
I am not sure I like doing that.

Why not? it'll be much easier and safer mechanically wise. If it's 5mm too short, it will still fit into the stock motor it was attached to originally.

Not sure what the grinding will do to the surface of the shaft. BTWthe original motor will not be going back in EVER.

If you take slow and don't heat the shaft up it won't hurt it.
Use the thin 1mm cut off wheels.

+1, even a hacksaw might be OK.
