My cruise control wont turn off when I apply the brakes, I either have to press really hard on the pedal, wait a second then it turns off, or the res/coast button. Anyone had this problem? I am worried that if someone else drive my car they wont realise this.

Sounds like the brake light switch is not working, but the presure switch in your brake booster is still working as the backup it is.
Check to see if your brake lights are working. If they arent, theres a good chance its the switch at the top of the brake pedal Nigel |

As with Nigel... Has to be the brake light switch... When you jump on the pedal hard the back up switch in the master cylinder cancels it... A soft press cancels it by use of the forever failing brake light switch in the EF/EL...
This problem was rectified in the AU cruise as the AU cruise physically wont set if there is no load sensed... Somehow they've made it detect the lamps and if the switch doesn't work then then it wont set... Where the EF/EL wont cancel when the switch fails... Had an issue when I put cruise into my old man's car (ED)... The EF/EL cruise was easier to install... Because the ED uses a separate cruise cancel switch the lamp load wasn't visible and the AU cruise module wouldn't work... Put an EF module in there and it worked first time... Cheers, Tim

brake lights are working, it crossed my mind that it could be the switch, but they are working.

one lamp isn't blown? The wrong wattage/type of globes haven't been fitted? Ie: someone hasn't tried to jam a single filament bulb in for a stop/tail combination?

I had the same problem. Couldn't figure out why the cruise control was so clunky to turn off. When I found out that the brake light switch often caused this, I checked and sure enough I had no brake lights. Had been driving around in heavy traffic every day for at least six weeks, and not one toot!
