An interesting one that i need some help with. Just the last couple of weeks the transmission has started doing something strange and it only appears to be when its cold. Car starts fine but when i put it into either reverse or drive the gear doesn't engage at first. Rev it a little and after a while it picks up and kicks in. This only happens whenever the car has been allowed to cool right down, rest of the day its fine. Any theories? Kms on the clock 218 000 and just recently changed the transmission fluid at about 210 000.

mine does the same only when cold...gets a bit of a slip as well. again only when cold and usually when I go round a corner...happens for about the first 5 minutes each day then fine

Yup....if you paid for the service take it back get them to check the level and for any leaks..if you did it yourself find yourself 4 car stands cause its a prick without that filler tube...god bless Ford for their forward thinking on that one!

Thanks for the tips everyone. My question now is will it damage the transmission operating it as it is, assuming that the fluid level is slightly low??

Quote: Thanks for the tips everyone. My question now is will it damage the transmission operating it as it is, assuming that the fluid level is slightly low?? Short answer: yes If the fluid is that low that the gears wont engage, risks are: Overheating Frothing of fluid leading to overheating Incomplete converter engagement leading to (yes) overheating All of which equals $$$$$$$$$$ |

Nah dont think so on the E series...the the filler plug is on the side...for a dipstick to plug straight in the hole it would need to be on a horizontal surface so the dipstick would actually work the same as one that rolled out of the factory with one.....sure the dipstick would work putting an elbow where the filler plug is but at best with the right level you get to see fluid maybe 5mm up it. Has anyone else bothered to put a dipstick/filler tube on a BTR?...if so what did you use?
