I'm trying to work out what's wrong with a 1000cc 105E Anglia.

The other night I stopped at an intersection and when I went to take off it made a clangy/grining metal on metal sound and stopped.

It cranked a couple of times after it stopped and now when you try to start it, the starter engages but nothing happens.

I can turn the engine very easily with a spanner and it won't roll start. There was a wire inside the dizzy cap that was a bit suspect so I replaced/re-soldered that, but it still won't go.

It's got plenty of oil and never overheated.

does the dizzy turn when you rotate the crank?

doesn't sound good, possible chain?

sounds like timing chain, or good excuse for 1600 x-flow.

Wouldn't it still crank if it was a timing chain? I put a spanner on the crank last night and I could turn it easy...

Could it be a problem with the gbox?

OK, so the starter doesn't 'turn' but the solenoid clicks into position?
Firstly if you can rotate the crank, then its no sized.
Secondly if you turn the key and the starter makes a whiring noise and it doesn't rotate the crank, then the ring gear has broken or slipped off the flywheel.

This would explain the grinding noise.

If it cranks and rotates the engine and doesn't start, you need to see if the Distributor is turning, if its not, then the timing has gone, leaving the dissy and valves stationary when the crank rotates.

It clicks and the solenoid engages but the starter doesn't crank. I tried roll starting it and it wouldn't start that way either, the engine turns but it won't fire. Maybe its a combination of things all happened at the same time?

The 105E starter motors didn't have pre engage starter..
Bendex type..
It worked on inertia to throw the gear into ring gear..
Check points in dissy, check spark..
Open throttle while looking down carb checking if there's
fuel being pumped by accelerator pump.. To check it's getting fuel..
Then as said above check that dissy is turning and has compression ..
I has it a guess the points have closed up or the wire on condenser is shorting...
This is taking me back nearly 40+ years...Awaken a few old brain cells.. Lol...
