if i bought a second hand motor would the cylinder heads be the same regardless of whether it came out of a xr6 or xt or anything else that runs the ba I6?

yep. only difference in the xr6 / xt in the B series was a body kit n crap.

XR6's had - Bodykit, Foglights, Intererior etc, some were LSD optioned (all had 3.45diff gears regardless). Pretty much it. Not really worth the extra $3000 price tag that gets added to it at second hand delearships.
