Over the last few days it's been getting colder and for the first 10 mins of driving in the morning, my blinkers wont flash.

When I turn either on, the light illuminates and then stays on constantly.

After approx 10 mins after the cars warm, or in warm weather, there is no problem.

I have led blinkers so they flash retardedly fast anyway when working properly. But when cold they're just like an orange light coming and staying on.

Any ideas? :?

Had exactly the same thing happen in a mates FJ40 Landcruiser. Cause was an intermittent bad earth. Its a pretty big job chasing bad earths though, especially on an older car with its fair share of dodgy wiring.

There isn't much you can do aside from either getting a different flasher unit, something controlled by a chip or something, or by wiring a lightbulb or something womewhere in the circut.

Or it could be as above. My money is on the LED's being at fault. Your flasher unit uses heat... Some operate as above link, other a bit differently. What i think is happening is because it's too cold, and you'r LED's are using f**k all power, the flaher wire just doesn't get hot enough to break the circut... which is why heating it helps.


I had a read, thanks, I have a bit of a better idea now.

I might do some chasing around and try and get a better flashed unit I think.

technicaly, it would actualy be the opposite....its not cooling down enough, which makes no sense...meaning its not the LED's fault. They do flash quick however because LED's have a lower resistance than bulbs so the power going through them earths out (Dissipates) more quickly (ie...power ALWAYS takes the LESS resistan circuit), hence speeding up the circuit

Conversely, if you hooked floodlights up to you indicators, they would stay on longer....they have much larger resistivity, so power would more than likely want to travel through that resistive wire (as it would now have LESS resistance than the floodlights) and keep the indicators on longer.

It should no way however cause this strange phenomenon

Yeh it's got me!

Guess she'll just stay that way for a while.
They're either going flat out or not at all!

Least they're still illuminating

whatever the case, problem will be solved by an electronic flasher unit.

yeh its strange y they dont use solid state flashers, can control anything with those....does any1 know if the new cars use this? or r they still using 'hot wire' technology
