usually from water entering the combustion chamber..... although my old ed engine was clean around the whole outer edge of the pistons but mine was burning huge amounts of oil..

Yeh Id agree. I reckon its from water, washing (turning to steam) the piston crowns clean. Was it missing ?.. Regards Darren.

How many kms does your engine have? My 370,000km and 270,000km engines were both alot cleaner than that.
Might want to run some Nulon upper engine cleaner through it once its going again.. Apologies for the random comment.

Looking at the pots you have worse troubles then clean spots.

Is it just a polished factory one? Looks good. No, it's just paint. When I do cyl head gasket jobs, I clean and paint the engine blocks again, makes the job more presentable, and gives a new clean surface to look at if it should fail again, makes it easier to see.
