the rest of the car is fine, appart from the drivers side front guard.

I have a feeling it was in a small bingle and the bonnet and guard were replaced. as they were the only 2 panels that started to peel and fade.

I got the bonnet and grill (the painter still has that) painted for $150, and am very happy with the results.

Damn you're kidding ... I was charged $150 for a bonnet before and $100 for a front quarter panel as well.

Don't do the mesh bit, they never look just right, seem to always end up looking just a pinch dodgy.

I agree - just stick the original grille on. it looks fine.
does / did the bonnet have it's heat shielding on?

It did and still does.

The previous ownder had always garaged the car, but i am not as fortunate, it went from looking ok to that in the space of about 18 months.
