Hi fellas,
I am looking at porting the head on EL fairmont ghia (just a 6) I was originally looking at getting a tickford head and porting that, however I got told by a few workshops that they have smaller ports and that I would be better off with a standard EL head and porting that instead. Does that sound about right? The car is stock standard at the moment running duel fuel. The mods I have planned for it are as follows Install vapour injection (cbf with liquid injection for the price and issues) Genie extractors and full exhaust system with high flow cats (either 2and half inch or maybe 3inch system) Ported and polished head (with better valves to suit lpg) Maybe a baby cam (only if this further increases my fuel enconomy) and a custom tune I am also looking at fitting a snort eaton supercharger kit just running low boost. This is mainly to give it a nice bit of torque down low. The car will b daily driven (100kms) so I am after maximum fuel economy not so much big power figures. The only reason for the charger is to have nice low down torque for daily driving Any thoughts on this combination? does anyone have something similar? Would this be good for economy? |

None of what you have just listed is going to help you use less fuel.

If you want economy, keep it stock and maintain the engine...or just get a 4 cylinder screamer and you'll save more fuel.

Thanks for the comments guys. I understand that the general consensus always remains more power=more fuel.
However if driven correctly without thrashing I beleive you can enjoy a happy medium. Like I said above I do not plan to make it a horsepower hero or anything. Even with the supercharger I would only be running stock boost (6psi I think they run or is it 7?) Once all mods are completed I would getting a full custom tune to suit also. |

seems like a lot of effort to make a E series more drivable
maybe instead of doeing all that and spending 8k or so just upgrade to a ba/bf sixpot? would be more economical and powerful than the old el.

Yeah I thought about that already. I was even looking at doing an engine transplant from a ba/bf. But just too much stuff around.
The EL I picekd up is in mint condition and its something that I have always wanted. Hence all the mucking around I am doing for it |

If you have a tuneable ECU, and an AFR meter, it is possible to tune it to have a little more power for less fuel.....as I have done it......http://youtu.be/jJTh9F3Vgg0
I have yet to re-dyno it after some small changes and another tune......soon hopefully.

It's a very complicated balance - perfect example was the BMW M3 following a Prius around a road course - the M3 used significantly LESS fuel...
- then again... maybe it's not at all comlicated - ie. if you pull only a little power from a powerful engine then it can be quite economical, but pull high power out of it and it'll take a suitable amount of fuel to make that power. To drive my old beast as if it was a prius would take barely brushing the eccelerator -in fact I'd probably have to put a stronger spring on it just to be ABLE to drive it that gently - and the fuel consumption would likely be quite good. - but ^%$k driving it like that!! - so it uses quite a bit...

Interesting stuff there. I dont plan on driving it like a hoon, just a few squirts here and there!
But will mainly be driven normally! I am also looking at installing a boost controller for the eaton supercharger (I didnt know there was such a thing for them) But with the controller apprently you can turn the boost right down. |

BoostedVT wrote: I am also looking at installing a boost controller for the eaton supercharger (I didnt know there was such a thing for them) But with the controller apprently you can turn the boost right down. no such thing, superchargers are belt driven, so to lower or raise the boost will require the change of the driven pully on the front of the blower. i suppose if you were driving around with just a 6psi pully on you could jump out of you car, pop the bonnet, take the drive belt off, swap pullys over, replace eveything, start her up and off you go with a higher psi pully on. but can you do that in the space of a light change when you wanna have a quik light race with that stupid commy beside you?.

mmm interesting.
not really a boost controller. more so a small thing to controle how open a bypass valve is. just more things to go wrong i rekon.
