I am considering replacing the dizzy in the EL I6, but I have read of a lot of problems with the aftermarket dist. gears destroying the aux shaft gear, and the dizzy gear.
Would it be a good idea to buy this: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-MultiPoi ... 955wt_1139 and knock off the gear and put the original (standard) gear on? |

Check with Bursons or someone like them and get a price and yes i would swap the gear from your old dizzy to the new one as long as it is in good nick.

if the one in the link is actually the one they send, it might be ok as the gear looks like it is made of bronze, not steel like the other aftermarket ones.
i know the last genuine bosch dizzy i brought had bronze gear aswell.. |

Just inferior quality drivegear - the aux shaft drives that gear, while the dizzy doesn't have much load, the oil pump (which is driven by this too) does have a fair load - high volume pump's create more probs too.
When you swap drivegears, check the freeplay on the original with feeler gauges, so you can setup similar on the recipient dizzy. From memory, the drivegear does have a shim or two on the shaft.

Hmmmm..... interesting lot of comments. As luck will have it, I still have the original dist. that came out of the engine. A few years ago I picked up a genuine Fraud dizzy off Ebay, installed that, and it has given no trouble. The reason I wish to change it is that this one has done at least 200K, and I feel it is time for a refreshment.
I think, for the sake of piece of mind, I will take the original one to a dizzy shop, and get it checked/reconditioned. |

All you really need to do is replace the upper bush - you can still get them from Ford.
Soak it in oil overnight before you use it. The rest is inspection of internals - if the hall effect setup is not oil soaked or badly deteriorated, should be okay. Take off the TFI, inspect and cleanup, apply some new heatsink paste, and refit.
