Hi guys
I had the side of my radiator (near air filter box) split while doing 110/115 on highway,it warped my T head so replaced that But getting a terrible tapping sound from bowels of motor,thought it was oil pump at first but oil is getting to adjusters,could I have damaged the crank ? or even more? because of the high speed area were I stopped,I had no choice but to force it further on until I found safe area to park ( I didn't want anyone to rear end it at those speeds ) cheers Dino |

Terrible TAPPING sound could actually be the crank (or, more accurately, bottom of conrods) hitting the tin sump. Try putting your hand on the sump and get someone to turn it over.
!!!!CAREFULLY!!!! Do not do this with loose clothing in the area of front of engine. Thanks. I had this issue (as others have also). I also had a strange sqweeking noise once, which was the sandwich plate between the back of the motor and the front of the gearbox - It would heat up and expand slightly and scrape on the flywheel. Managed to fix this by getting a long flat screw driver into a little gap in bellhousing and pushing it further away from flywheel. The bottom of conrod piston clamps have been known to hit sump, usually as sump has come up for some reason. Can't see extreme temperatures in the engine doing enough to raise the bottom of the sump, but it is worth a look. Mine did it when cold, and when warmed up the sump expanded away from the crank enough that it was not an issue. A few odd looks from pedestrians at lights for a few months until I finally changed motors. Any chance you can video the TAPPING NOISE and post here? It would help everyone to diagnose it for you. So saying that, E series blocks are worth nothing, and AU's are worth slightly more than nothing. So if you're up for it, fix your Tickford head, put it on an AU block and replace the whole lot. In the meantime, drive the clanking old EF around. |

The tickford head was totally warped beyond repair so going to scrap,will try the hand on sump trick at weekend,oil pressure & temps are all good the power is normal just that hideous knocking. again thx fiend cheers Dino |

If you overheated it that much its quite possible that a gudgeon pin has siezed from heat and then flogged out.
Remove plug leads one a time and see if the noise goes away or gets quiter.

thanks for ur input EVL098, will check that out
for an engine that has done 260tho it just doesn't wanna die & still no sign of its age (1994 ) when we took the head off we was surprised how good it looked. I have a 99' AU s1 xr6 engine to replace it with soon as I can get a sump modified, but might spend few bucks on this engine once out, it deserves it thanks guys Dino |

Could also be a broken timing chain guide or tentioner no released propperly.
Did you Check the guides when you swapped heads? |

thanks for your thoughts, timing chain & guides all good + tentioner was replaced. guess the only way to find out is to remove engine & strip it down,thanks guys for all your help appreciated it heaps. cheers Dean |

Might be worth looking for a good 2nd hand engine and strippig/building it whilst the other still runs.
