Alternator bearing question regarding any special speed rating
I have rang Consolidated bearings and quoted them the bearing size and the price made me fall of my chair. I only asked for the smaller 10x27x11 and they said $31.90 When I asked why so much for a small bearing they stated they were special high speed brearings. I have changed many over the years and have never been told they needed to be a special high speed type. Any one have any additional info please At this stage it looks like a Reg and bearing set from the USA for around $60 |

First I've heard of that too - So we're talking about your usual Falcon Mitsubishi Alternator ??
See if you can get the part no off the bearing - probably an NTN, and google it. Both front and back bearings are expensive if buying here - as you found, US is usually a good option. If the bearing doesn't have any excessive side play or feel rough, you can repack it with HT bearing grease - carefully lift the seals off with instrument screwdrivers, and work the new grease through, wipe excess with a clean cloth, and refit the seals.

Thank you for your reply.
Mine is the motcraft one and I did repack the small one, its number was NSK B10-50D measures 10x27x11 I had to strip and clean it and fit some brushes to keep it going for now, it had a PS hose leak some 5 years ago, then the timming chain tensioner oil leak and finally the large O-ring in the front of the PS unit failed drowning it yet again softening the brushes. Any way I got it going and back together and was going to get the parts and do it properly and now consolidated have added confusion. Have found the correct colour reg in the US with the correct size bearings so will just go for that I think, now I have it going again so no great panic now. |

Yeah, front bearing would probably be taking most of the load.
Here's a good writeup on dismantling, and swapping internals: auto-electrical-forum-f89/how-to-pull-down-an-alternator-for-an-el-au-and-swap-bits-t111664.html
