Hi guys having a problem with my s1 fairmont, im geeting a creaking sound from the steering when rocking the steering wheel back and forth particuarly at slow speeds. It sounds like metal rubbing on metal, the sound seems to be comming from around the rack area. The rack seems to have a very small leek around the boots. Also it doesnt make any noise when the front end is on jacks and there is no load. Any ideas what it could be? Would it be the steering rack? Last time i had issues with a steering rack was in my ed but i got a squeeling sound from it

Any help much apreciated

Last time I had this issue, the diagnosis was a dead rack. get a reco one on exchange before its left too long.

If its an AU it could be loose rack bolts. They are well known for it.

And what are the rack bolts? Are they just the large bolts that hold rack to the chasis?

Yep. exactly that.

The Ebay reco ones are fine, I've been through it before in my old EF, I am not sure if E series and A series racks are interchangable. I'll leave this one to the brains trust.

NO.....the E series and A series racks are very different.......E series, the bolts are Vertical, and A series, the Studs are Horizontal.
