On Ebay last night i seen a sump plug for ea-au but it had a magnet on it to collect all the metal any thoughts on this

I actually installed that one today . Seemed to work fine . Not leaking and should catch any shaving from when I tapped into the sump

That magnet will not do much. Sure you'll see stuff stuck to it, but it'll be a small percentage of what's in the oil.
Anything that will stick to it would also be filtered out by the oil filter. |

yeh thats what i was thinking the oil filter would do didnt think it would n any good stronger magnet would be better but at $12 sounds like a cheapy

Yep, any large particles should be caught by the oil filter. It's a full-flow filter, so all the oil has to pass through it before going to the bearings, valve gear, etc. But an oil filter catches only down to 30-40 microns, typically. If you want to catch the smaller metal particles, get a Filtermag - a super-strong magnet you attach to the oil filter (http://www.filtermag.net.au/). Of course any magnet will work only with iron-based metals and won't pick up other particles like aluminium, copper, lead, etc.
