HI Guys,
Hoping someone can help or confirm for me. I have an ef fairmont 6 cyl auto. I had the battery light come on last week with the voltage dropping. Checked the alternator and it was covered in gunk/oil from the leak in the power stearing pump. I pull the alternator out and cleaned it up and reset the brushes. drove the car for 45 mins car ran fine. I went back out that same day and after 10mins the car went into limp home mode, all gagues on dash were lost, battery light stayed on check ABS light came on aswell as a flashing light on the left hand side (possible check engine light?). If i start it now the battery volts rise quickly up to 16 volts and then i lose all gauges agin and battery light stays on. Prognosis is that the regulator in the alternator has packed it in? Can anyone confirm this before I replace it with a new one (not to mention replace the power steering pressure hose and connections that have caused the damage.) Thanks Chris |

Haha, I had the exactly same problem yesterday.
It's the regulator in the alternator. I got our Auto Electrician to double check for me. It's also cheaper to buy a new alternator, as the regulator is internal and would mean you'd have to pull apart the alternator, etc. For a "new re-manufactured" one from eBay, it cost me $147 incl. postage. (Cheaper than my local parts guys, whom I know really well.) {DESCRIPTION}
