ba xr6 na, xforce 2.5' mild steel exhaust
ive had this annoying rattle in my exhaust for a little while now, pretty much its from low in the revs. ive found the issue, its the exhaust pipe rubbing/hitting the heat shielding, area of contact is in between the two mufflers where the exhaust runs up over the rear axle. ive tried bending the heat shield back but it didn't do much good. can any one see any issues i might have with wrapping that section of the exhaust in exhaust tape, then cutting out the heat shield that's making contact?

Put some big hose clamps around it. Other than that I cant really see too many issues doing what you said.

Get some silicone.... must be the roofing stuff (not the coloured bathroom version).
Squirt the silicone in between the heatshield and the muffler or pipe. Leave it for an hour to set. No more rattling. Have been using this stuff for decades, particulary on exhaust gaskets, and it works a treat. |

turns out the plastic fuel tank is actually behind the part of the heat shield i wanted to remove, so removing that was a no go zone. ive fixed the problem, used contact and high temp silicon to glue the heat shield to itself or the body pannels, no more rattle .... for now
